Japan Startup

Japan Startup is a programme introduced by the Japanese government to make the Japanese market more accessible to overseas entrepreneurs.

Japan has become an increasingly attractive destination for entrepreneurs from around the world. However, starting a business in Japan is not always straightforward.

Typically, the first steps involve establishing a company and obtaining a Business Manager Visa. These procedures are complex and require a substantial amount of time and financial resources, including making an initial investment, securing office space, submitting various forms to government agencies, and handling numerous other tasks. Together, these demands can be extremely challenging, especially for foreign startups.

In an effort to lower these barriers, the Japanese government launched the Japan Startup. This initiative aims to attract talented individuals from overseas, stimulating regional economies and industries through their innovative businesses.

Applying Japan Startup

1. Selection of Region

The programme allows startup applicants to select the region of Japan where they wish to establish their business base. Applications, along with the business plan, are reviewed by the municipality of the chosen region.

Given that each municipality defines the types of businesses it supports, the first step is to find a region that aligns with your business.

2. Presentation

In Japan, the quality of a presentation can have a significant impact on the outcome. This is particularly crucial when submitting applications to government agencies and financial institutions.

Therefore, applicants need to ensure that application forms are correctly filled, complete, and that all questions are answered. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Applicants are assessed based on the strength of their business plan and their likelihood of qualifying for a Business Manager Visa.

Startup Visa

A Startup Visa of up to two years is granted to successful applicants who are accepted into the Japan Startup Programme.

The key benefit of the Startup Visa is that it gives applicants the time needed to prepare and launch their business without the immediate pressure of incorporating a company.
